A lump of coal upon a seat,

When touched unfurled a furry kitten.

A patient friend, a listening ear

Heard childhood fears and sorrows.

Warm, purring body curled in my lap

Transported me outside myself

To venture into nearby woods,

To stalk adventures and imagined fun.

A cat: a friend, a confidant, therapist!
